Independent research done by an Altoona High School student on endangered butterflies has earned him a prestigious award from a local environmental group.
Derek Scheider's research project on behalf of the endangered Karner Blue butterfly was recognized this past week by the Chippewa Valley chapter of the Sierra Club. Derek was awarded with the Sierra Club's Green Earth Award for his research titled, "Karner Blue, Where Are You?" Derek has provided NSP with critical information on the Karner blue locations from his survey work and has been helpful in providing visual information to field employees on the butterfly.
Each year, the Sierra Club recognizes an individual, organization or business in the Greater Chippewa Valley who have made an outstanding contribution in the areas of environmental education, protection or resource conservation.
